Networking is key when it comes to growing your business. With the growth of social media, networking was already developing and evolving online, then came 2020 and a global pandemic.

We were forced to work remotely and from home, which in some ways made networking harder than ever. Although, as everyone was in the same boat, we were able to adapt and find new ways to network online and from home. Now we are finally getting back to normal (a new normal albeit) and more in-person networking opportunities are popping up, it’s time to get yourself back out there and take on these opportunities.

Any kind of networking can be daunting, especially when a lot of us have been at home by ourselves, working from our dining room tables. The most important thing to do is get yourself out there and make yourself known. This way, not only will you be reaching out to connect to other people, but they will be looking for you too.

Making the most of face-to-face networking.

The first thing to remember is that, although it’s good to step out of your comfort zone, make sure you’re not taking a huge leap of faith. The last two years have been difficult and coming out of it can be scary, so make sure you’re keeping safe and are completely comfortable.

Prepare yourself.

It’s important to prepare yourself before going to a face-to-face networking event. Ensure you have all information about your business, a place you can record notes, prepare yourself with the knowledge you may need and bring any promotional items you may have such as business cards etc. Before you get to the event, do your research on the event, who’s hosting and who’s attending?

Connect and follow up.

Remember, once you have made a face-to-face connection, you get their details so you can contact them again. A simple way to do this is by connecting on LinkedIn. This connection means that you are able to connect with them again and build a relationship with them in the future.

Appearance is everything.

As shallow as it may seem, it’s important that you’re looking your best and that you’ve made an effort to be there. Your facial expressions and body language will have an impact too, being friendly and approachable is the most effective way to make connections.

Making the most of digital networking.

Even though we are back to face-to-face networking, digital networking is still extremely valuable and gives you the means to connect with people anywhere in the world.

Update everything.

Make sure all your social media, websites, profiles etc are all up to date. When attending virtual events, people will be looking at your platforms and first impressions are everything. If your information is outdated, it may make you look lazy or unprofessional.

Get Involved.

It can be easy to disappear behind your computer screen and become a spectator in online events. Make sure you’re getting involved, asking questions and having your say. Asking good questions and creating interesting talking points is a great way to highlight your knowledge and make you and your business memorable.

Follow Up.

Just like face-to-face networking, following up is just as important in digital networking. Connect with people on social media and start a conversation with them about the event, this is a great way to start and build on a relationship. Working alongside other people in your industry is a great way to grow and develop your own business.
